Madhoo calls out ageism in films: I have no interest in portraying the character of Ajay Devgn’s mother | Hindi Movie News – Times of India
During a recent event in Chennai, Madhoo said that she has absolutely no interest in playing Ajay Devgn‘s mother on the big screen, in a possible scenario. She argued that they both were launched together in the industry with their 1991 film Phool Aur Kaante and are of similar age.
She then recalled that during the 90s, heroes dominated the scene in action films and her roles mainly involved dancing, delivering a few romantic lines, and shedding tears with parents. While she enjoyed dancing, she was deeply unhappy with this shift after doing a film like Roja. She realised that her true passion lies in being an artist and doing meaningful work. She further said that she would often struggle with the feeling of dissatisfaction when she started working in Hindi cinema. This eventually led her to quit the film industry after working for about 9-10 years.
When Madhoo wanted to get married, she wrote a letter to the people in the industry in which she expressed her intention to leave. Though she had recognised now that her move was partly driven by a sense of childhood arrogance, at that time she felt that they didn’t deserve her.
After leaving the industry, Madhoo understood her identity as an artist and realised that she needed to return to the field and secure a role that would allow her to fully express her talents and pursue her passion.
Citing Tabu‘s example, Madhoo said that she is grateful for the positive changes that the industry has undergone and she credited the web space for changing the mindset of the storytellers. However, she said that getting meaty roles are difficult for women of a certain age even now.
