Kesha on Her New Sci-Fi Podcast, Working With Chloe Bailey, and Discovering a New Perspective on A.I.

More and more celebrities seem to be getting into the scripted-podcast game. Earlier this year there was Soft Voice, a thriller voiced by Bel Powley, Naomi Scott, and Olivia Cooke; and now the singer-songwriter Kesha has stepped up to the plate with Electric Easy, a brand-new sci-fi podcast costarring Chloe Bailey and Mason Gooding.

Told from a wide variety of perspectives, Electric Easy has been described as “a musical neo-noir science fiction podcast about a forbidden love between a runaway android and the human sent to hunt her down.” (It it any surprise that it’s set in Los Angeles?) Recently, Vogue spoke to Kesha about starring in and executive producing the project, considering A.I. from a new perspective, working with Chloe Bailey, and more. Read the full conversation below.

Vogue: First off, where are you based right now?

Kesha: I’m in Los Angeles, and I’m currently driving to rehearsal for a tour, which I’m really excited about.

What first drew you to this project?

I read a script that was sent over by Emma Specter Vanya Asher, and I instantly fell in love with it. It just made me really happy because I could see everything in my mind; it reminded me of all of the amazing drag shows I’ve been to all over the world, from New York to Berlin and beyond. It also confronts social issues—it celebrates and highlights the struggles of the LGBTQ+ community—and it gave a perspective on artificial intelligence that I’d never heard or seen before. We’re used to A.I. being the destroyer of mankind, right? But this project is differentiating that perspective.

What was the recording process like?

We did this project remotely, which meant a lot to me because we were locked down in quarantine, and Electric Easy was a lovely escape. I figured out how to set everything up for the podcast at my house, and we recorded it over Zoom. Recording a podcast was more emotional than I ever expected, though, because you have to get the emotions across in your voice.

Is there anything you watched or read to prepare for Electric Easy?

Paris is Burning, for sure. Drag is just amazing, and I just got to sit back and remember all of the amazing times I’ve had experiencing it.
