John Galliano Leads a Tour of His Favorite Objects and Creative Inspirations

“I love to surround myself with objects, for they inspire—not just the energy they bring with them, but my relationship to them,” Maison Margiela creative director John Galliano says of the art that defines his home in Picardy, France.

And surround himself he does, with decor that includes a Delft tile hearth by artist Eloïse d’Argent in his Salon Jaune; 18th-century blinds from a Japanese monastery sourced by Coco Chanel collaborator Lilou Marquand; and a 110-year-old mannequin (whom Galliano affectionately calls “Auntie”).  Perhaps artwork takes on the most vital role in his domestic ambience. When stuck on a design detail of a complicated dress, Galliano often gazes upon a black-and-white image captured by famed fashion photographer Irving Penn. “Somehow his energy penetrates me in the creative process, and I always finish the dress,” Galliano says. “I like to have the spirit of Mr. Penn in the room.”

Then, there’s what Galliano calls his “favorite image ever”—a portrait of Madame Bijou by Brassaï, the French-Hungarian artist known for capturing Paris nightlife between the wars. “I still lose myself in this image. The volume of the coat, the hat, the voile, the jewels, the fallen stockings, the tap-dancing shoes,” he muses. “It’s an endless dialogue with Madame Bijou.”

Above, go inside his home in the latest video in Vogue’s series Objects of Affection, which takes viewers inside the homes of fashion’s favorite creatives. As Galliano himself says, “It’s a magical place to be.”
