Ja Morant ‘investigated by police for assault after alleged confrontation with high school student’

Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant was investigated by police for assault after reportedly clashing with a high school student in September. 

The NBA star has been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons in recent weeks following a wave of controversies, which most recently landed him with a suspension for flashing a gun in a strip club. 

It has now emerged that Morant found himself in more trouble with police in September last year. 

The 23-year-old was investigated for assault for an alleged confrontation with a high school student, according to TMZ. 

According to a Germantown Police Department report, obtained by TMZ, the altercation occurred at Houston High School in Tennessee on September 22 at around 7:10pm.

At an after-school volleyball game, Morant’s sister, who attends the school, reportedly got into a verbal argument with another student. 

Witnesses at the scene told police that the two students had called each other ‘b****’ according to the report, which prompted Morant’s sister to contact the point guard. 

Morant, his parents, baby daughter and ‘a group of’ adult males came into the gym a short while later, according to the report. 

The majority of the group – barring Morant’s father, Tee – approached the student who had been quarrelling with his sister in the stands to confront them. 

‘Which one of ya’ll called her a bitch?’ Morant’s mother, Jamie, allegedly said.

Police say they told her that she ‘can not come upstairs and confront the students and they did not need to make a scene at the school.’

However, while they were talking to her, officers say that one of the men that had arrived in Morant’s entourage moved past the police towards the students. 

Witnesses claim that the man slapped a phone out of the hand of a student, who had been trying to take a photo of Morant. 

He then allegedly said: ‘I don’t care about none of that, I will beat y’alls ass.’

One witness later alleged that the man ‘was about to pull a gun.’ However, police say in the report that they did not observe a firearm. 

Everyone then left the school gym without further incident, according to police. 

 Morant’s mom, Jamie (right with his dad, Tee) asked: ‘Which one of ya’ll called her a bitch?’

However, police say that the mother of the student who was involved in the argument with Morant’s sister wanted to press charges, against all parties, including Morant, for intimidation and harassment, 

Meanwhile, Jamie Morant reportedly also wanted to press charges against the student for threats and intimidation. 

The Grizzlies star reportedly was investigated for simple assault, intimidation – no physical contact, but no charges were filed, TMZ reported. 

The mother of the student involved in the spat with Morant’s sister told TMZ that her son was also investigated but wasn’t charged either. 

The Grizzlies’ head of security, named as Kevin Helms in the police report, is said to later have gone to the school to talk to authorities about the incident. 

He was ‘asked to give a verbal trespass warning to all parties per the request of the Principal,’ police say.

The incident is one of at least four incidents Morant has been involved in during the past year.

Also during last September, Morant was sued for allegedly punching a Tennessee teenager in the face during a pickup game, something the NBA star claims was in self defense.

Police interviews obtained by The Washington Post revealed that the 17-year-old told detectives from the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office that the point guard hit him ’12 to 13 times,’ adding that Morant’s friend struck him an additional ‘four to five times.’

The teenager claimed that as he got up to leave after the fight Morant went into his house and re-emerged with a gun.

The police did investigate the plaintiff’s claims for several weeks before submitting the case to the district attorney’s office in October. However, prosecutors decided there was not enough evidence to proceed with a case. 

The altercation reportedly came just four days after another incident. According to The Post, last summer, the head of security at a Memphis mall told police that Morant ‘threatened’ him during an altercation in the parking lot.

Morant’s mother reportedly got into a dispute with a employee at a shoe store at the mall and she called her son who arrived shortly after with a group of ‘as many as nine people.’

According to the police report, Morant and his friends refused to leave the parking lot when confronted by the director of mall security.

Police arrived and a ‘verbal confrontation’ reportedly escalated before someone in Morant’s entourage allegedly pushed the security chief in the head. 

‘As the group was leaving the premises … Ja Morant said, “Let me find out what time he gets off,” ‘ police wrote in the report.

Most recently, Morant, Memphis’s leading scorer, livestreamed the video of himself with the apparent weapon on his Instagram account after the Nuggets beat the Grizzlies on Friday night.

Glendale police said Wednesday there was not enough evidence to pursue criminal charges against Morant.

The Grizzlies initially announced the 23-year-old would miss at least two games. Immediately after Glendale police said they would not pursue charges, the team said he would not play at least four more games.

That means the earliest Morant could return would be March 17 at San Antonio. The Grizzlies entered Thursday’s game tied with Sacramento for second in the Western Conference.

Head coach Taylor Jenkins said Thursday that members of the organization had spoken to the All-Star guard about his off-the-court conduct in the hope of avoiding the current situation.
