IT Industry cheers WFH rules relaxation for SEZs till next December

The IT industry has welcomed the commerce ministry’s decision to relax work from home rules for those employed in Special Economic Zones (SEZs).

Wipro chairman Rishad Premji called the move a “critical and progressive approach to the future of work.” Premji added on Twitter: “It only further strengthens the India tech story.”

IT industry body Nasscom called it a “major step” towards ease of doing business.

“Firstly, industry was worried about non-compliance with any SEZ rule. The earlier notification was leading to an interpretation in some locations to have at least 50% employees to work from office. Now, the government has removed any scope for ambiguity and provided flexibility to the industry. The industry can figure out new and sustained work models by December 2023,” said Ashish Aggarwal, vice president and head of public policy at Nasscom.
The notifications in July and subsequent FAQs had led to a lot of confusion among officials and industry in interpreting the rules, he told ET.

“There was inconsistency in interpretation in different geographies leading to operational challenges for companies,” Aggarwal said.

Tech Mahindra managing director CP Gurnani also took to the US microblogging platform to say that the hybrid work model would ensure the best of talent and the best of technology for the IT-Business Process Management industry and their global customers.

The government on Thursday allowed complete work from home option to employees of IT units in SEZs till December 2023.

The change – through the sending of an email to avail the WFH option and not a list of employees working from home – brings much needed relief, industry experts said.

“This furthers our efforts to provide flexibility and omni-connected experiences to our people and bring in diverse talent pools for India to emerge as a global hub for digital talent,” said Rekha Menon, chairperson and senior managing director of Accenture in India in a tweet.

The ministry notified key changes to the Rule 43A of the SEZ Rules, 2006.

It permitted units seeking WFH in future to email an intimation on or before the date of commencement of WFH.
