ISL: Heated contest earns Odisha FC, ATK Mohun Bagan 1-1 draw | Football News – Times of India

A meticulous and well-drilled effort by Odisha FC saw them delay ATK Mohun Bagan’s chances of sealing playoff berth as the Kalinga Warriors held 10-man Mariners to a 1-1 draw in their Indian Super League match at Tilak Maidan Stadium in Goa on Thursday.
The match began on the fast lane with two goals coming inside the first eight minutes on either side of the park as Redeem Tlang’s opener for Odisha was cancelled by Joni Kauko’s equalizer from the spot.
Javi Hernandez missed another penalty for Odisha in the 24th minute while substitute Liridon Krasniqi’s powerful strike shook the crosspiece one minute from full time before Roy Krishna, who came in as a substitute the 54th minute, was given marching orders after seeing his second yellow of the match in the added time.
Winger Redeem opened the scoring in the fifth minute as Mizo winger Jerry Mawihmingthanga provided a low cross from right. The assist evaded all the white shirts and Odisha forward Aridai Suarez in between before falling to Redeem, who managed enough power on the ball from near the six-yard box before going down to beat ATKMB goalkeeper Amrinder Singh at left post.
However, the Juggernauts’ party was short-lived. Three minutes later, Odisha full-back Sahil Panwar was found guilty of tripping ATKMB frontman Hugo Boumos inside the penalty area while battling to win a long ball. Referee Aditya Purkayastha was spot on to award a spot-kick and Kauko obliged. Mariners’ midfield general sent Odisha keeper Kamajit Singh the wrong way to draw parity in the game.
The adrenalin rush so early in the opening few minutes flared tempers in the middle. The players were engaged in a heated exchange and a few pushes following a Liston Colaco shot, taken after the referee’s whistle for a foul, which hit an Odisha player on the face. But the referee’s timely intervention saved the situation from lingering much.
However, in the 24th minute, the referee gave a contentious penalty decision against ATKMB when he felt Tiri was guilty of bringing Suarez down just inside the area. Replays showed that the ATKMB centre-back’s effort of clearing the ball away was perfect as he touched the ball first and Suarez fell in the process. In what could be seen as poetic justice, the penalty kick by Odisha talisman Javi Hernandez was nowhere near his standard and was saved, also on the rebound, by Amrinder at right post.
However, if the match official’s decision of penalty was erroneous then he and his assistants were also to be blamed for not spotting Amrinder going out of his position just at the time of the kick. Purkayastha also failed to spot Tiri holding Hector Rodas with a tight embrace inside the area during a corner kick towards the end of first half, which should have gone against ATKMB.
