My feet have been damaged by the woes of summer footwear. I’ve gone through an unhealthy rotation of sandals and kitten heels, each adding suffering to my feet. My vintage kitten heels are too tight and ravage my precious little toes thanks to friction. My thong heels create cut imprints across the tops of my feet, making it impossible to walk long distances. Even my flip-flops have wreaked havoc on my heels because there’s not adequate cushioning. At times, my feet have become a Band-Aid-ridden mess.
Though, my battered hoof worries were quelled the other day after I found myself on eBay trying to find a pair of white kitten heels after my Tom Ford-era iteration broke en route to work. It will cost more to repair them than I initially paid and I didn’t want to pay an arm and a leg—or in this case, a foot—for a new pair, so I found a pretty little cream version by the brand Naturalizer. They had a modest block heel and a wide flexible white band that stretched across the top of the foot. When I arrived to work in them, my editor immediately complimented the cushy heels. Looks aside, they were comfortable.
When I browsed the Naturalizer website, I discovered a bevy of stellar pieces. There were thong heels galore, divisive-yet-chic wedge heels, and your classic clogs. Almost every iteration has a review, some of them with ample text and a glorious amount of unedited detail. Some of the reviews skew positive. For the Joey Sandal, which boasts a stacked heel and thick straps, one shopper noted: “I purchased these sandals and I love them. Nice fit and very comfortable. I should have bought 2 pairs, different color. I recommend them.” Others were negative but with a hint of a silver lining for the Lenna Wedge, my personal favorite, “Just please bring back the Marla sandal. I’m tired of trying alternatives that I don’t like as much.”
Though when I asked my co-workers and followers on Instagram if they ever delved into the Naturalizer world for comfort-first-footwear IRL, plenty of people did. Actor Lauren Servideo described her pair of heels as “wicked comfy and also can be hella cute,” adding, “Only heels I can walk in.” Clémence Polés of Passerby wrote that she has a pair of pink slides that she bought on Etsy, in addition to an iridescent iteration. Actor Adams Bellouis noted that she wears vintage Naturalizer platforms, in addition to the pumps and low heels with a padded footbed. “They are lightweight, so I can run and walk around in them. Fine for the outdoors in grass.” Mary Gone, creative director, notes a technical detail, adding that “they come wide fit and are comfortable AF.” Even those who haven’t delved into the Naturalizer world were curious. Consultant Mellany Sanchez said she liked the Lenna Wedge sandals, noting “Damn, I like the bottom joints,” while editor Nikki Ogunnaike wrote, “These are kinda cute tho!” and Brynn Wallner of Dimepiece wrote, “Wait I want the thongs.”
