Inside Haim’s Chanel-Filled Trip to Art Basel

Este, Alana, Danielle Haim are in the middle of a well-deserved moment. In the last month, they’ve snagged two Grammy nominations—including for Album of the Year—announced plans for an expansive 2022 tour, and hit the big screen thanks to Alana’s acting debut in Paul Thomas Anderson’s coming-of-age drama, Licorice Pizza. With all the awards season press and pre-tour planning, the trio’s schedules are packed, but over the weekend they made time to head to Miami for the return of Art Basel. Canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 crisis, the renowned art market returned this year bigger and bolder than ever, drawing the gallery crowd and luminaries from fashion, film, and music. For the sisters, the event was a chance to celebrate creativity while experiencing legendary art up close. “Seeing pieces by Calder and Keith Haring up close was incredible,” shared Danielle post-Basel. “[There were] so many interesting things; discovering new artists is always such a treat.”

Of course, half the fun of Basel revolves around its party scene. While in town, the trio was able to attend two of the week’s best bashes, hitting up the opening of Chanel’s Miami boutique and the brand’s dinner in honor of artist Es Devlin’s “Five Echoes” installation. An immersive piece created in honor of Chanel No. 5’s 100th anniversary, the installation featured an all-white labyrinth for guests to explore and a garden that utilized the flowers and plants found in the fragrance’s notes.

Longtime fans of Devlin’s work, the group was thrilled to connect with the artist. “Getting to meet Es was a dream,” says Este. “She has inspired us for so long. We’ve been to so many shows she’s designed, so being able to walk through, and experience sculpture was amazing.” Equally exciting, the night’s performance by Rosalía, who thrilled the crowd with hits from atop the installation. “[The atmosphere] was so infectious,” says Alana. “We are the biggest Rosalía fans, so seeing her live was incredible.”

Through it all, Haim had fun deep-diving into Chanel, wearing looks from Virginie Viard’s latest collections to both events. “Chanel is classic,” says Este. “The pieces never age, and [they] always elevate an outfit.” That timelessness was evident in the outfits the trio selected for themselves. Whether it was Alana’s lavender tweed jacket and matching skirt or Este’s glittering black catsuit, their fashion was on point. It was hard to play favorites with so much Chanel to choose from, but one exceptional ensemble stood out. “Definitely my black sequined suit,” says Danielle. “Can I get married in this look??”
