India Inc gets into IPL mode to make staff feel better at work

India Inc has gone into the IPL mode. Companies including Coca-Cola, NoBroker, upGrad, CleverTap, and Dream11 are setting up large screens in offices to let employees watch the matches together besides organising activities around the popular sporting event. Some are decorating offices with the IPL theme while others are holding mini leagues of their own.

The idea is to encourage fun at work, especially after almost three years of working in remote and hybrid modes, company officials said.

“We take employee engagement very seriously as it is not just a buzzword but a commitment to ensure the overall wellbeing of our workforce,” said Mayank Kumar, cofounder of upGrad.

For IPL this year, the edtech startup has installed projector screens across multiple office floors for employees. “While we ensure sincere working hours on a day-on-day basis, we also encourage frequent break sessions during the second half of the day,” Kumar said.

Coca-Cola India has set up live screening of IPL matches at its office to ensure employees do not miss out on the cricketing action. “Big screens lead to a theatre ambience with employees coming together even during office hours, to cheer for their favourite players and teams,” a company spokesperson said in an emailed response.

Fantasy sports platform Dream11, an official IPL partner, too, has set up TV screens across its office that they call ‘stadium’. “Once the IPL season finishes, we celebrate all the hard work and perseverance of the team by going for an official retreat,” a Dream11 spokesperson said.

Customer engagement solutions provider CleverTap has gone a step ahead by hosting a mini league called CleverTap Premier League. “It was a16-team interdepartmental tournament that saw over a hundred of our employees participate,” company chief executive officer Sidharth Malik said. CleverTap live streamed the entire tournament for employees across geographies to join in virtually.

Real estate portal NoBroker has not only decorated its offices with IPL theme but also gamified its business outcome-based incentive programme.

“We run monthly incentive programmes for our teams; however, for the IPL months – i.e., April and May – we have tweaked the incentive structure to relate to cricket,” said Saurabh Garg, cofounder and chief business officer of NoBroker.

It has multiple teams playing business matches with each other where employees get to make runs including singles, doubles, boundaries and sixes. Then based on the business outcomes, employees also earn bonus runs, wickets and penalties.

“At the end of every day, we decide the winning teams, man of the match, and celebrate the first boundary of the day, first six of the day, etc,” Garg said.

Executives of all these firms said engaging employees is a top priority for them. “Such engagements with employees help us connect with them on a much deeper level than what would be possible within a typical workplace,” Malik of CleverTap said.
