ICC World Cup 2023: Meet Afghanistan’s team mentor, who is India’s former cricket captain

The Afghanistan cricket team is in India for the upcoming ICC World Cup 2023. They will play their warm-up match against Sri Lanka at the ACA Stadium in Barsapara, Guwahati, Assam tomorrow.

Ahead of the ICC World Cup 2023, starting from 5 October, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has announced their team’s mentor.  ACB has appointed a person who is a former middle-order batsman and captain for the Indian national cricket team, and he is none other than Ajay Jadeja.

On Monday, ACB takes on Twitter to announce Ajay Jadeja as the Afghanistan team’s mentor. 

“ACB Appointed former Indian Captain and middle-order batter Ajay Jadeja as AfghanAtalan’s Mentor for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023,” the ACB tweeted.

To briefly explain Ajay’s Test career, he has played around 15 matches for India from 1992 -2000 and scored 576 runs at an average of 26.18. He smashed four half-centuries and knocked the highest score of 96 runs.

As far as his ODI career is concerned, he has played 196 matches and scored 5359 runs at an average of 37.47. He was a right-handed batsman who hit 30 fifties and six hundreds with a highest score of 119 runs. During this period, he took 20 wickets as an ODI bowler.

Ajay’s most memorable ODI innings was his cameo of 45 off 25 balls in the 1996 World Cup quarter-finals against Pakistan in Bengaluru, including smashing 40 runs in the last two overs bowled by one of the greatest bowlers, Waqar Younis.

The Afghanistan cricket team is in India for the upcoming ICC World Cup 2023. They will play their warm-up match against Sri Lanka at the ACA Stadium in Barsapara, Guwahati, Assam tomorrow. 

Their first World Cup 2023 match will be played against Bangladesh on 7th October in Dharamshala.
