‘I could have easily…’: Misbah-ul-Haq reflects on his reverse lap shot in 2007 T20 World Cup final

Sixteen years have passed, but the moment forever etched in the memories of cricket fans in India and Pakistan is Misbah-ul-Haq’s iconic scoop shot during the inaugural T20 World Cup final against India in 2007.

With just 6 runs needed to secure victory from the last four balls, Misbah dared to attempt a shot over fine leg. However, his audacious move backfired as S Sreesanth, positioned at short fine-leg, caught the ball. Pakistan’s hopes crumbled as they fell short at 152 runs, chasing a target of 157. India emerged victorious, clinching the World Cup by a mere 5 runs. Nevertheless, Misbah’s shot became the focal point of discussion, captivating cricket enthusiasts even to this day.

“People always told me that was a wrong option. Okay pace was not there , that I get it. But It was a wrong execution,” Misbah told Shoaib Malik in ‘Master Class With Malik ‘ on A Sports.

“If you see the video again, you can notice that I was cramped for room and that’s why it ballooned up in the air. If I could have reached to the ball, I could have easily cleared that fine leg fielder,” he added.

In the 2007 match, Misbah showcased his exceptional batting skills when Pakistan found themselves in a challenging situation at 104/7. Despite the odds, he played a pivotal role by scoring a crucial 43 runs for his team. As the game reached its climax, Pakistan needed 13 runs with only one wicket remaining.

To handle this crucial over, Dhoni entrusted Joginder Sharma with the ball. However, the over began with a wide delivery, giving Pakistan an advantage. Unfortunately for India, Joginder Sharma then conceded a six, intensifying the pressure. In a bold attempt to turn the game around, Misbah attempted a reverse lap shot but ended up losing his wicket.
