Hugh Freeze is set to make his return to the SEC after his previous endeavors saw him resign in scandal.
The Liberty University coach has reportedly agreed to become the new head coach at Auburn, per Sports Illustrated’s Ross Dellenger.
Freeze amassed a record of 34-15 in four seasons at Liberty – having joined the school in its second season of playing FBS football. In that time, Freeze took the Flames to four straight bowl appearances – including in 2022 – winning the first three. It’s unclear if Freeze will be head coach for Liberty’s upcoming bowl game.
He takes over for Brian Harsin – who was fired after eight games earlier this season. Harsin accumulated a 9-12 record during his time with the Tigers.

He was set to start a sixth year, but in the summer of 2017, phone records were uncovered in relation to an NCAA investigation into recruiting violations as well as a defamation lawsuit related to said investigation by Freeze’s predecessor, Houston Nutt.
Nutt’s attorneys scanned those phone records and found that Freeze had called a female escort service from his university-issued cell phone.
An investigation by school officials uncovered ‘a concerning pattern’ of calls from this device and university leaders demanded Freeze resign, or else he’d be fired.

Freeze chose to resign that summer, leaving offensive coordinator Matt Luke in charge of Ole Miss.
Ole Miss was placed on probation by the NCAA which resulting in the vacating of 33 wins and a two-year bowl ban.
After sitting out from coaching for a year, Freeze agreed to become the head coach at Liberty University.
Per Dellenger, Auburn is set to pay Liberty about $3 million in buyout money in hiring Freeze away from the school.
