HowIMadeIt! Sahil Khattar: Kapil Dev and Syed Kirmani said ‘Haalat kharab hai, karna hai ya marna hai’ in the 83 World Cup – Times of India

‘Karna hai ya marna hai’- this was the talk, not in exact words though, between Kapil Dev and Syed Kirmani when India was reeling at 17 for 5 against Zimbabwe in a league match against Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge in the 1983 World Cup played in England (won by India at Lord’s on June 25, 1983). And then came that extraordinary, unforgettable 175 not out from Kapil!

Sahil Khattar, who plays Syed Kirmani in Kabir Khan’s upcoming ‘83’ (starring Ranveer Singh as Kapil Dev) and is our guest this week on #HowIMadeIt, tells us that his game-changer is unarguably ‘83’. See the full interview in the video below.

And guess what! No, you won’t be able to guess what Syed Kirmani told Sahil when he first saw him! “He said, ‘Arre, Kiri bhai!’,” Sahil tell us excitedly. But mind you, euphoria apart, the role was not easy to enact. Mr Khattar had not done any wicket-keeping in school or college. He got a tough training from Kirmani, with Kabir Khan keeping a cursory eye on him. What unfolded was Sahil diving to his right to catch Faoud Bacchus, which he says he got it right in one single take and couldn’t believe it when Kabir said ‘Ok, moving on’. “I ran to the monitor to see how could it have gone so smooth,” Sahil says matter-of-factly.

Sahil is definitely disappointed that ‘83’ is not yet seeing the light of day, largely due to the COVID pandemic which has not yet driven Kabir and Reliance Entertainment to take the OTT route. “But when I see their gam (sadness), I say mera kitna kam (less),” Sahil rounds off an interview which you must see (click above) immediately even if you aren’t a cricket buff. The journey from being a YouTuber to now an actor is inspiring and a story that deserves the attention of your eyes and ears.
