How Wolves boss Bruno Lage has called on his younger brother to help lead his side to a top four bid

REVEALED: How Wolves boss Bruno Lage has called on his younger brother, nicknamed ‘the Captain’, to help lead his side to a surprise bid to finish in the top four this season

  • Bruno Lage has lifted Wolverhampton Wanderers into a surprise top four charge
  • His younger brother Luis Nascimento is part of the manager’s backroom team
  • He is known as ‘the Captain’ due to his more serious attitude than Lage

Bruno Lage has one captain of his Wolves family on the pitch in Conor Coady, but another off the park – his younger brother.

Luis Nascimento, is nicknamed ‘the Captain’ but better known to Lage as his younger brother.

The 42-year-old was working at Rio Ave as assistant to former Sheffield Wednesday and Swansea City manager Carlos Carvalhal – following in his sibling’s footsteps – before getting the call from Lage.

‘Luis is more serious than me so Carlos started to call him Captain Nascimento,’ said Lage.

‘There’s a Brazilian movie about the police [called ‘Tropa de Elite’, starring Wagner Moura] and the star is Captain Nascimento. After I left Carlos’ staff, Carlos invited him to work with him.

‘He’s had the same pathway as me. I went to Benfica in 2004 and worked there for eight years, he went there in 2005 and was there for 14.

‘We worked together but not in the same teams. For example, when I was at the Under 15s he was working with the Under 11s.’

Clearly there’s an understanding and a chemistry between the Portuguese brothers, which has benefits.

‘The good thing is we shared experiences between us,’ said Lage. ‘So if I was doing something new – some exercise or idea – I would share it with him and he would try it with the kids and vice-versa.

‘When I came here I thought ‘I need one more person with me. Luis, Alex [Andre Silva] and Carlos [Cachada] all do things and Tony Roberts coaches the goalkeepers, and I have two analysts.

‘There are too many things to know, so I need top guys to be a better manager.’

Nascimento’s duties are to prepare training and advise Lage on how the opposition – Wolves entertain Leicester City Sunday – might line up.

‘He prepares training – this is his big responsibility,’ said Lage. ‘He already knows my ideas. He looks at all the information on the opponents.

‘For example, how will Leicester play against us, with three or two midfielders? We try to create these scenarios and prepare those things.

‘It’s team work; I’m just one of them. I’m the manager; I have the big salary but they are the same level as me.’
