It’s been over half a century since the last coronation took place in Britain—and while the upcoming coronation of King Charles III will certainly bear certain similarities to that of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, in 1953, it can’t be denied we’re living in a whole new world. Accordingly, viewers will have the once-in-a-lifetime chance to watch the event live when it takes place on Saturday, May 6.
Don’t worry: You don’t have to make the trek to the U.K. to partake in the royal excitement. CNN will be airing special coverage of the coronation from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. London time (also known as 5 a.m. to 12 p.m. EST, so set those alarm clocks, early birds). The day’s events will also be available to watch on CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox, and various cable news networks. If it’s coverage from the other side of the pond you’re looking for, however, either head to BBC America, or you can watch the entire coronation—for free!—on the BBC’s YouTube channel and website.
The coronation ceremony itself will begin at 11 a.m. London time, or 6 a.m. EST. Yes, it’s early, but don’t forget the fanfare that accompanied the royal wedding of Prince William and Princess Kate in 2011, when Vogue writer Michelle Ruiz got up at 5:45 a.m. to take in the proceedings and didn’t regret it for a minute. The coronation is sure to be no less star-studded, and it definitely won’t be lacking in pomp and circumstance, so if you’re a true Anglophile, the crack-of-dawn rise might just be worth it.
