With DIY videos on the social media platform literally garnering hundreds of millions of views, wannabe tradies are learning the hard way that it’s not such a good idea to do-it-yourself.
In reality the DIY trends are probably likely to unimprove your home, rather than make it better for your lifestyle or potential sellers.
A new study from Confused.com has found that as many as four out of 10 DIY ‘hacks’ could damage your home and would not be recommended by licensed tradespeople.
The most popular DIY TikTok trends that could damage your home are
– painting decking with a floor brush
– cleaning with drills
– floor stencils
– painting sinks
– painting with a sock
– duct tape splashback, and
– stick on fireplace tiles
“Unfortunately, watching a few TikTok videos does not make you an expert in building or plumbing, and this can sometimes mean that people are left disappointed with the finish, functionality and even safety of their DIY home hacks,” DIY expert, Peter Hodgins, a carpenter and joiner for over 20 years said.
“If you’re unsure about how to do a certain task, it’s always best to consult a professional to ensure you’re going to be left feeling happy with the results of your home project.”
The most popular home DIY TikTok trends according to the Confused.com study are:
– Flower wall, with almost 34 million video views
– Pallet furniture
– DIV vases
– Painted arches, and
– Homemade rugs
Mary Nguyen of Wallpaper Trader said like many of today’s pop culture trends, the popularity of flower walls began with Kanye West and Kim Kardashian. An uber expensive flower wall was a feature of their wedding.
“It’s the ultimate display of wealth and privilege to have a wall of fresh flowers,” she said.
“An endless wall of white roses has become the ultimate influencer backdrop.
“With DIY materials and fabrics, many of these trends are driven by people wanting to have as many different back drops and poses as possible and in some cases as expensive as possible.”
Ms Nguyen also said the emergence in popularity of flowery backdrops and themes including wallpaper has come on the back of the return of flowers in fashion.
“Flowers and those really, romantic, big blooms, that classic look is back and very elegant blooming wallpaper has made a return too. I’m supplying styles I haven’t in ages,” she said.
“It comes in cycles and the trend at the moment in fashion is very feminine, very romantic dressing. Embroidered flowers, large and traditional women’s clothing, a return to petticoats and pleats and blooming sleeves.”
Another consideration for rookie DIY-ers is the damage your well intentioned improvements could do to your home.
“With limited access to tradespeople during the pandemic and more spare time on our hands, it’s no wonder that so many people have been turning to TikTok for inspiration for their next home DIY project,” Jessica Willock, home insurance expert at Confused.com said.
“Not all information on TikTok is reliable however, and by carrying out these projects without professional assistance, some DIY enthusiasts may risk damaging their home in the process.
“Before undertaking any big DIY project, ensure that you have the appropriate home insurance to protect yourself and your home, and let your insurer know of any projects that may affect the value of your home – failure to do so could potentially invalidate your insurance.”
According to the study, the most popular TikTok decor style is Bauhaus.
