Back in March, New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen made his feelings clear when he announced he hadn’t “called one team” about possibly trading running back Saquon Barkley, the second-overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft who is on track to earn $7.217 million in the final year of his rookie contract.
Barkley earned Offensive Rookie of the Year honors for his debut pro season but has since struggled to consistently remain on the field. He went down to a campaign-ending torn ACL in September 2020 and then missed time last year with an ankle problem. As a result, the 25-year-old accumulated 593 rushing yards, 263 receiving yards and four total touchdowns across 13 games for the 2021 season.
A seemingly frustrated Barkley admitted earlier this spring he is “just tired of whatever is written about me — the BS that’s said about me or this team.”
Giants head coach Brian Daboll is preparing to guide the club into a season for the first time in his role and let it be known while speaking with reporters on Wednesday he’s “glad” Barkley is on his roster and part of his offense.
“He’s been good. He’s been able to do everything we’ve asked him to do … The routes we’re asking him to run, his quickness, his ability to get in and out of breaks, his long speed. It’s all good,” Daboll explained about Barkley, according to Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk.
Both Barkley and quarterback Daniel Jones are in contract years and likely will need to take massive leaps playing under Daboll and company if they wish to be with the Giants at this time in 2023.
