Grace Wales Bonner Will be Pitti Uomo’s Guest Designer This June
When Vogue Runway’s Sarah Mower recently reviewed Grace Wales Bonner last collection, the designer teased some intel: “At some point in the next few months—Wales Bonner is keeping her cards close to her chest about exactly where—there will be an event, a happening somewhere in the world that will involve performance, music, friends, and clothes.”
The location of that multifaceted shindig to come was today revealed as this June’s 102nd edition of the Pitti Uomo trade fair in Florence, where Wales Bonner will star as the season’s guest designer. She will show her spring 2023 collection in June.
Pitti’s policy to highlight a shifting roster of only a few runway showing-brands each season has created the context for especially memorable, often stand-out, shows, including some from Telfar, Raf Simons, Craig Green, Off-White, Rick Owens, among many others. Pitti’s coy terming of Wales Bonner’s upcoming turn as a “show-event” adds to the impression gleaned from Mower’s review that this will be a significant production in Wales Bonner’s ongoing catalogue of cultural storytelling in fashion practice.
In a release the designer herself said: “I welcome this special opportunity to express Wales Bonner’s vision of cultural luxury at the historically important institution of Pitti Uomo.” Lapo Cianchi, Pitti’s director of special events and communications, added: “We have been familiar with the work of Wales Bonner since she debuted, attracted first and foremost by her cultural sensibility and multidisciplinary approach that comes across in her collaborations with artists and other stylists, while appearing in each one of her collections.” The next Pitti Uomo runs from June 14 to 17.
