Gary Neville claims Man City are still in control despite draw with Crystal Palace

‘Man City do just edge it’: Gary Neville claims Pep Guardiola’s side are still in control of the title race despite draw with Crystal Palace… as Liverpool remain hot on their heels with a front five that is ‘an absolute joke’

  • Manchester City were held to a goalless draw with Crystal Palace in the league
  • Pep Guardiola’s City now only have a four point lead in the top-flight title race
  • Liverpool are hot on their rivals with a game in hand in the Premier League

Gary Neville insists Manchester City still have the advantage, despite being held to a 0-0 draw by Crystal Palace, as the Premier League title race gets interesting.

The draw for Pep Guardiola’s side at Selhurst Park means they are just four points clear at the top of the league table with the Reds having a game in hand.

The former Manchester United defender believes Liverpool remain hot on City’s heels due to their superior forward line, which makes them a real threat, but is still confident City will end up on top in the hunt to be crowned champions.

The influence of Reds new signing Luis Diaz has helped them get back in contention, with even more options in attack, along with eight consecutive wins in the league to put them right back in contention.

Jurgen Klopp now has the likes of Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, and Diogo Jota at his disposal.

‘I wouldn’t say it’s 50/50, Man City do just edge it,’ Neville told Sky Sports. ‘But Liverpool have got five players up front who are an absolute joke.

‘And Diaz, I saw him for the first time live at the Carabao Cup final and I couldn’t believe what I was watching for a player who had just entered English football. He’s absolutely sensational.

‘You think about where they were, AFCON, Salah and Mane going away for a month, I thought that City would be out of sight. You thought City were going to win the league at a canter and they’ve not done.

‘That’s credit to Liverpool, credit to the players, the signing of Diaz in January and the fact they’ve got a great manager who is able to drag that level of performance out of them week in week out.’

Neville does however feel like City’s draw with Palace will have too much affect on them, but it might add some confidence into the Reds squad, knowing they have edged closer to catching their rivals.

‘Liverpool gain some confidence, I don’t think Manchester City drop too much confidence, there is a long way to go.

‘You look at the fixtures and try to think, which ones are the difficult ones, and which are the ones they are going to pick up points in.

‘Then you throw the Champions League quarter-finals in, you don’t know what teams they’re going to draw, but you can imagine two big Champions League games in around that City and Liverpool game then you have a lot of games to contend with in terms of your squad.

‘The games that look simple, might be more difficult when you throw in these big European nights.’

Fellow pundit Jamie Carragher has lauded both teams as ‘the best in Europe’ no matter what the outcome of the title race.

‘We are watching two of the greatest teams that have played in the Premier League era.

‘Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea teams and different Manchester City teams.

‘Even if this Liverpool team don’t win the league this year and City end up winning it.

‘This Liverpool team could end up with one title, but these are the two best teams in Europe, no doubt about that for me and they’re both in our league.

‘They’re two of the best teams we’ve ever seen in the Premier League, you can see it by the points totals that they get.’
