Gary McAllister hopes Old Firm record can spark Rangers when Celtic come calling

GARY MCALLISTER hopes Rangers’ Old Firm record will give the champions the confidence boost required to kickstart their campaign against Celtic.

Rangers head into derby day in need of a performance and a result on the back of a difficult few weeks domestically and on the continent.

Manager Steven Gerrard joined several of his players in isolation at home as a Covid-impacted Light Blues line-up overcame Alashkert on Thursday evening.

All attentions are now on Celtic and assistant McAllister won’t focus too much on their upturn in fortunes under the guidance of new boss Ange Postecoglou.

McAllister said: “I very rarely comment on what’s happening elsewhere. We’re very much aware of what’s happening across the city but we’re always fully concerned about what we do.

“Generally in an Old Firm, it’s about how we perform. We’ve seen Celtic score some goals recently, we are aware of their strengths. But our preparation will be the same.

“We look at analysis, we look at the games from every angle, we look at the strengths and weaknesses of the opponent. We will prepare the exact same as every other game for this game on Sunday.

“We’ll go in there and we want to get on the front foot. We are at home, in front of our own fans and if we can all come together, it will be a good game.

“We would like to hope our boys will show that little bit of confidence in that we’ve done pretty well in the fixture.

“But in general, I’ve been watching these games for many years and form and previous history tends to go out the window.

“It’s about what happens on the day. Who’s going to make the first mistake? Set pieces play a big part as well.

“In this game, you must remain fully concentrated and focused. Don’t get carried away with the game because there’s got to be some calmness as well.”
