Ganesh Acharya opens up about working with Karan Johar for the first time on What Jhumka song from Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani | Hindi Movie News – Times of India

Ace choreographer Ganesh Acharya has collaborated with Karan Johar for the first time to make Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt dance on What Jhumka, the second song from their upcoming film Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani.
Sharing his experience of working with Karan, Ganesh told ETimes, “This is the first song that I have choreographed for a film directed by KaranJohar. I have choreographed songs for films produced by him but not directed by him.So, I was excited to work with him. My rapport with Ranveer Singh is totally different. This time we had to decrease the energy and do a softer song. Let’s see how people like it.”
He further added, “I had shown some bits to Karan who told me to make Ranveer do the similar expressions that I do in my songs. I have worked with Alia before in Badrinath Ki Dulhaniya and she is a very good dancer. This combination of Ranveer and Alia is interesting.”
What Jhumka is a remake of the old classic song Jhumka Gira Re, sung by the legendary Asha Bhosle from the 1966 mystery thriller Mera Saaya. Ganesh understands the fact that though working on a remix song is a risky affair and it is difficult to match up to the essence of the original songs, he has only tried to enhance it a little without doing anything gimmicky.

“It’s risky to do a remix song. So far, the remixes that I have done have worked like Aankh Maare from Simmba. We can’t reach the level of the greats who made the original songs and if we think that we can’t do justice to the original then we shouldn’t be making remixes. Old is gold. Uss gold ko haath laga ke pital karne ka humko haq nahin hai,” he said.
“I have tried to keep the hook step of Jhumka Gira Re in the old style itself. I only tried to enhance it a little. I didn’t do anything gimmicky. I made them do mime to make it softer in energy. I have tried to bring the poise that used to be there in the old songs. There were almost 600 dancers in the song. We shot the song in 6-7 days. That’s Karan’s style,” he added.
Ganesh said that there was a lot of excitement on set, the atmosphere was also great adding that Karan was present for every shot. He also said there was a Punjabi Akhada which they removed and did this song.
The choreographer said that after What Jhumka, he has choreograped another big song which is from Akshay Kumar starrer OMG 2. He revealed that it is a huge song about Lord Shiva.
