According to France’s interior ministry, arrests during the fifth night of rioting over the police killing of Nahel in France have risen to 719.

Several schools, police stations, town halls and stores have been targeted by fires or vandalism in recent days. Some 2,800 people have been detained overall since Nahel’s death on Tuesday.

Nahel’s mother told France 5 television that she was angry at the officer who shot her son at a traffic stop, but not at the police in general.

France riots: Thousands of police deployed to prevent violence

Some 45,000 police were deployed across France last night and backup was dispatched to the previous days’ flashpoints, including Lyon, Grenoble and Marseille cities. Of the total, 7,000 were concentrated on Paris and its suburbs to keep the violence in check.

A number of towns have declared overnight curfews.

The killing of Nahel has sparked riots across France. NAhel, a 17-year-old boy was born in Nanterre, west Paris. He was the only child of his mother and used to work at takeaway delivery. According to a BBC report, his education was described as chaotic. He was enrolled at a college in Suresnes to train to be an electrician. Naheld was of Algerian descent and lived with his mother Mounia.

As per the BBC report had given his mother a big kiss before she went to work, with the words “I love you, Mum”.

Shortly after nine in the morning on Tuesday he was fatally shot in the chest by a French cop while driving a Mercedes car. At 17 he was too young for a licence.

Nahel’s mother believes the police officer who shot him “saw an Arab face, a little kid, and wanted to take his life”.

Nahel had spent the past three years playing for the Pirates of Nanterre rugby club.

France clashes: Rioters target mayor’s house

Rioters in France rammed a car into the home of the mayor of a town south of Paris, injuring his wife and one of his children, the mayor said Sunday.

Mayor Vincent Jeanbrun wrote on Twitter that protesters “rammed a car” into his home before “setting a fire” while his family slept.

“Last night a milestone was reached in horror and disgrace,” wrote the mayor of the town of L’Hay-les-Roses.
