Former Blue Jay Ryan Goins officially announces retirement

Former Toronto Blue Jays infielder Ryan Goins officially announced his retirement from baseball on X, the site formerly known as Twitter, Monday evening.

“As an athlete you never think it’s coming and then one day it’s staring you right in the face,” he said in the post. “As a lot of people know I spent this last year coaching but never officially announced that I was done playing the game that I’ve loved since I was a little boy with a dream.”

Goins last suited up professionally with the Atlanta Braves triple-A affiliate in 2022, playing in 90 games. He last played in MLB with the Chicago White Sox in the shortened 2020 season.

Although he signed a minor-league deal with the Kansas City Royals ahead of the 2023 season, he didn’t end up playing in any games this year.

The eight-year MLB veteran is mainly known for his tenure with the Blue Jays, where he spent five seasons after being picked in the fourth round of the 2009 draft by the club.

“I want to say thank you to the Toronto Blue Jays for drafting me and giving me my first shot,” he said.

Goins was an outstanding defender, playing 448 games with Toronto from 2013 to 2017. He slashed .228/.275/.335 with the Blue Jays and hit 20 home runs.

A member of Toronto’s post-season runs in 2015 and 2016, Goins played in 14 playoff games over the two trips to the ALCS.

He also returned to Rogers Centre this summer as a part of the ceremony to put Jose Bautista in the Level of Excellence.
