Ferguson on ‘major difference’ in Morelos as he suspects Van Bronckhorst ‘boot up backside’

BARRY FERGUSON reckons the “major difference” in Alfredo Morelos may be down to the impact of new boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

The former Ibrox star suspects the new boss may have held talks with the striker to demand more form him under the new regime.

Morelos has impressed in recent weeks with Ferguson theorising that his strike against St Mirren shows the upturn in Morelos’ form.

The Colombian netted his side’s second goal as he slammed home a rebound inside the box to kill off the match.

And Ferguson said on Go Radio: “His goal sums his up just now. Good header, but he’s first to react, that’s sharpness, that’s fitness.

“When you’re fit, you’re fit upstairs and that’s what happened with his goal against St Mirren. He was first to react before any St Mirren defenders.

“There’s no doubt about it, I’ve seen a major difference in him since Gio’s come in, and that’s maybe what he needed.

“Maybe he needed a kick up the backside because there’s no doubt he’s got so much quality.”

For Ferguson, Morelos’ performances under Steven Gerrard may have warranted some harsh words depite his vocal support of the striker.

And the Ibrox icon reckons “match-winner” Morelos may have been rejuvenated after talks with Van Bronckhorst over his expectations.

He continued: “He (Steven Gerrard) always supported him in public, I’m sure behind closed doors he wouldn’t have been happy with his performances or maybe his fitness levels.

“But there’s a clear change in him and maybe Gio’s had that input, maybe he’s sat him down and said: ‘Look, I need you to be fitter because you’re a big player for us.’

“When he’s on that type of form he is a big player, he’s a match-winner and Rangers need players like him playing like that every single week.”
