@EveryOutfitonSATC Is Owning the “‘Sex and the City’ Extended Universe”

Garroni: It does get into the whole Showgirls question, which is, “Is Showgirls good?” Depends on your definition of good. Is it entertaining? Of course.

Fairless: Well, I’ve been watching Emily in Paris, which is really bad. It makes And Just Like That… look like, I don’t know…

Garroni: Breaking Bad.

Fairless: But it has value. It’s escapist. I enjoy it. And I do think that if anyone is obsessively watching something, whether they’re hate-watching it or not, you are a fan of that show. You like the show. If you didn’t like it, you wouldn’t watch it.

Garroni: People are so emotionally invested and there is no way to make them happy.

One quibble people have with And Just Like That… is the sense that the women crawled out from under a rock and are aggressively confronted by “woke culture” at every turn.

Fairless: It would make a little more sense if they were suburban women, but New Yorkers… even a white, middle-aged woman knows a person of color. I get that people’s friend groups can still be quite segregated, but to me the level of awkwardness they all have around this, except for Carrie, I guess, who’s the wokest somehow—it does feel like a very transparent attempt to atone for the past transgressions of the franchise. At the same time, I can see their intent was to make a more diverse, inclusive show.

It seems they’re rotating a few different characters—LTW, Seema, Anthony—into the Samantha void. Do you think any of those people are functioning best in that fourth seat, or is it irreplaceable?

Garroni: By the way, if they had just put LTW in that seat…

Fairless: And just elevate Anthony, who also has a Samantha-esque perspective. She would be the one cracking the jokes about how politically correct everyone suddenly is. That has become Anthony.

Garroni: It’s an irreplaceable seat. Having said that, Anthony is the closest approximation.

How are you coping with the Samantha-shaped hole?

Fairless: They could’ve very easily written her out with a single line and never revisited it again. I like that they continue to reference her because the audience can’t get over it, either, so why not acknowledge it?
