Eric Bieniemy not bothered by LeSean McCoy criticism

Former NFL running back LeSean McCoy is not sold on what Eric Bieniemy brings to the table as an offensive coordinator, and Bieniemy is not really concerned with his former running back’s thoughts.

Bieniemy was introduced as the new offensive coordinator of the Washington Commanders on Thursday, and he was asked about McCoy’s recent comments that suggested the Chiefs’ passing game and offense was more about head coach Andy Reid than it was about Bieniemy.

Bienemy called McCoy a future Hall of Famer and said that he is entitled to his opinion, but it is not going to impact him or what he does as a coach.

“That’s life,” said Bieniemy, via ESPN’s John Keim

“You have good and you have bad. It does not impact me in any way because one thing you learn when you’re in this position, you have to learn to eliminate distractions. My job is to focus on the now. Everything outside these walls has no impact on Eric Bieniemy moving forward.”

Several former Chiefs players defended Bieniemy after McCoy’s comments, including wide receiver Tyreek Hill who seemed to suggest that McCoy did not like the way Bieniemy coached him during the 2019 season.

Bieniemy has been passed over for a head-coaching job in the past few hiring cycles despite the Chiefs’ success on offense with Bieniemy as offensive coordinator. But Andy Reid’s input on the offense, as well as his lack of experience calling plays have been two of the reasons most often cited for that.

Now that he is out of Reid’s shadow in Washington, and presumably, in charge of calling his own players and fully designing his own offense, he is going to get an opportunity to show what he can really do.
