England v New Zealand: Jack Leach is the first England spinner to take five-fors at home since 1974

England need 113 runs with eight wickets in hand to clinch victory in the third Test against New Zealand as they stand on the brink of a remarkable series clean sweep.

Jack Leach took 5-66 on day four of the third Test against New Zealand at Headingley to give him match figures of 10-166 – his first 10-wicket haul.

Daryl Mitchell finished with 538 runs at 107 – the second-highest aggregate in a three-match Test series in England behind Graham Gooch’s 752 against India in 1990.

It’s also the highest total by a New Zealander in a Test series for 50 years, going back to Glenn Turner’s 672 – from eight innings to Mitchell’s six – in the West Indies in 1971-72.

Mitchell and Tom Blundell became the fifth pair to share four century partnerships in a Test series.

While batting together, they faced 1,417 deliveries. Since records became available, only West Indians Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Carl Hooper have faced more as a partnership in the same series, at home to India in 2002.

Since Derek Underwood took 10 for 82 against Australia in 1972, only two spinners have claimed 10 in the match in a Headingley Test: Graeme Swann managed 10 for 132 against New Zealand in 2013, and now Jack Leach, with 10 for 166.

Leach is also the first England spinner to take two five-fors in a home Test since Underwood against Pakistan at Lord’s in 1974.
