Vera Wang can’t say enough good things about Emily Ratajkowski, who attended the Met gala in the designer’s stunning red evening gown with a plunging neckline. She even had some words of wisdom about the ensemble. “It was really about how Emily felt, how she wanted to look. A woman is never more beautiful or seductive than when she is comfortable,” says Wang, later adding, “What I love most about this look is that while it is sensual, there is an ease to her and a looseness and a freedom. I don’t know if that comes with having a child, or being happily married, or where her career is going, but I just felt this very natural ease and movement.”
Ratajkowski mused on her new stage in life while getting ready for the gala. “Definitely giving birth totally changed my appreciation for my body and being pregnant,” she says. “And as a model, you’re so used to being something to be looked at and dressed. To have my body bring life into the world and grow life changed my perspective on everything.”
Throughout the getting-ready process, there were some last-minute adjustments. Namely, flowers that were added by hand to Wang’s creation. Ratajkowski typically likes to do her own makeup, but for the Met, she went with a makeup artist before stepping onto the red carpet. As Wang would say, it’s only the start of the process: “Once the dress is finished, one would think: That’s it. We’re done. But that’s only the beginning of the journey.”
