Dua Lipa Makes the Case for the Gargantuan Coat
“Go big or go home” has become the prevailing fashion philosophy. Stylish stars like Kendall Jenner and Rihanna are rocking big, baggy jeans, oversized blazers, and honking platforms. The current trend cycle is rebuking minimalism in favor of clothes and accessories that make themselves known and take up space. And Dua Lipa is extending this to her choice of outerwear, too. The pop singer emerged in New York City yesterday wearing a huge coat that feels very of-the-moment.
Draping herself in a long, slouchy-shoulder bomber coat by emerging German designer Gerrit Jacob, Lipa made swallowing herself in yards of leather look super chic. Aside from being bang-on with the oversized silhouettes seen on the runways at Balenciaga or Bottega Veneta, the gargantuan coat is perfect for winter layering in general. You can pile on your knits for blazers underneath it with total ease. For her part, Lipa wore a bright pink top and black trousers with it, her platform Docs adding a bit of edge to finish off the ensemble. (We also totally dig the black, Matrix-like shield shades.)
The key to pulling off such a big coat, you ask? It’s mostly all in the attitude. Pairing it with a sleeker trouser, just like Lipa did, does help make it feel deliberately baggy, though. Less “I’m wearing boyfriend’s jacket,” more “I’m fresh off the runway.”
