Doctor G makers initially tried for a U/A certificate; director Anubhuti Kashyap reveals what made them happily accept an A from the Censor Board – Exclusive – Times of India

Ayushmann Khurrana’s comedy drama Doctor G hits the screens tomorrow and the film also marks the directorial debut of Anubhuti Kashyap. Despite being a youth targeted and an A certified film, Junglee Pictures’ Doctor G has seen encouraging advance bookings which is a breath of fresh air for a mid-sized film. Speaking to ETimes, Anubhuti says that while she was initially not convinced with the A-rating for her film, she took the advise of the Censor Board and happily accepted it without any cuts.

While Ayushmann has often chosen unconventional projects like Vicky Donor, Shubh Mangal Savdhaan, Bala, Badhaai Ho, and Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui; Doctor G is his first film to get an A certification. Anubhuti tells us they were initially trying for a U/A certification for their film as they are trying to normalise these conversations in the society. “When we pitched the movie to the Censor Board, they told us that this is a beautiful film, but the topic it covers, or probably a part of it, is something adults should definitely talk about. But it is a little tricky to open it up for children to see. They suggested we might have to tweak a few things for it to be suitable for children. But the purpose of our film is to talk about things that don’t get spoken of, so that we can normalise it in every day conversation. I am trying to normalise perspectives about body parts, how you look at or speak about certain parts and certain aspects, that carry a stigma in our real life. The Censor Board too felt that these are things that should be talked about among adults, and it should be done without any cuts or tweaks. So they advised us to take an A, not for anything explicit, but just for the subject. When I heard this, I happily accepted an A,” she explains.

Besides, Anubhuti feels they are fortunate Doctor G has not faced any objections on social media for its unconventional subject. “Thankfully, the boycott culture has not touched our film yet! I think it is uncalled for and blown out of proportion the way it is happening,” she shares.

Doctor G is a story of Uday Gupta (Ayushmann Khurrana) who finds himself as the lone male student in the Gynaecology department. His reluctance leads to chaos, confusion, comedy and eventually, great camaraderie with his fellow classmates. The film also stars Rakul Preet Singh, Shefali Shah and Sheeba Chaddha in pivotal roles and it releases in theatres tomorrow.
