Director Daniel Scheinert’s Thrifted Oscars Suit Was From a Lost Luggage Store

Everything Everywhere All at Once directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert had a big night at the Oscars on Sunday. Their genre-twisting film picked up a whopping seven awards in some of the night’s biggest categories such as Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress (which went to the incomparable Michelle Yeoh). Before sweeping the ceremony, however, Scheinert made an impression on the champagne carpet. The director surprisingly wore a thrifted suit for the occasion, which he purchased from a lost luggage store, no less.

According to The Washington Post, Scheinert’s sleek, slim-fitting black suit—complete with multicolor buttons—was purchased a few years ago from a store in Scottsboro, Alabama called Unclaimed Baggage, the nation’s only “lost luggage” store. Unclaimed Baggage purchases orphaned suitcases from airlines all over the country. When bags aren’t claimed after a 90 day period, the store purchases them and the contents inside of them, which are then either sold, recycled, or donated to charity.

In an interview with AL.com, the director’s mother, Becky, claims that Scheinert bought the suit from the store several years ago, at a time when Scheinert needed more formal attire and was beginning to attend more and more red carpet events. Recently he tried it on and, since it still fit, he decided to wear it to the ceremony. “Low and behold, it fit his very tall, very skinny frame,” she said. While a few other stars wore vintage clothing to this year’s Oscars, such as Rooney Mara in an Alexander McQueen dress from its fall 2008 collection, Scheinert and his tux undoubtedly have the most interesting backstory.
