Grocery shopping can be an intimidating experience, especially for beginners. From atta to chawal, fruits to vegetables, dal to spices – there are so many components of the Indian kitchen that need to be purchased from the market. It requires plenty of knowledge and experience to gauge good quality produce and purchase the correct ingredients. So, when a desi mom wanted her son to go to the market and purchase a particular daal – she came up with a creative solution. The hilarious tweet was shared by user Ahmed (@dumyboyfriend). Posted on July 18, it has already received over 103k views and 2.7k likes. In the picture, we could see a daal sample that Ahmed’s mother had sent along with him. It was none other than red masoor daal, which is commonly made in the Indian kitchen. “My mom gave me a sample of the kind of daal she wanted me to get from the store because she didn’t trust me to remember,” he explained in the tweet.
A flurry of reactions and comments poured into the post by the Twitter user. Many of them agreed that even they found the daals and ingredients quite confusing at times. “Even I don’t know which daal it is, and it’s not even my fault they all look the same,” said one user. “When I got married and moved to London I had my mum put samples of all kinds of daal in a ziplock and had them labelled,” agreed another user. Others said that the nomenclature often got confusing. “Why is it called Laal daal when it is clearly Orange,” commented another user.
