David Baddiel announces death of his father, saying he will leave a ‘huge hole in my sky’

David Baddiel has paid tribute to his father after announcing he had died, saying he will leave a “huge hole in my sky”.

The comedian revealed the news on Twitter, sharing an old family photo while praising the team of carers who helped look after his parent over the last few years.

His father had Pick’s disease, a rare form of dementia – something Baddiel documented in his 2017 Channel 4 programme The Trouble With Dad.

He said: “My dad Colin Baddiel died earlier tonight.

“Thank so much to all of you who sent unbelievably lovely messages about him in response to all my posts over the years.

“He leaves a huge hole in my sky.

“Thanks so much for all your incredible messages of support. It all so helps.

“I’d like to also thank while I’m here @bowles_clive, Sandra Wiseman and all the other amazing carers who helped look after my dad for the last seven years.”

TV cook Nigella Lawson was among those offering their condolences, replying: “Oh David, I’m so very sorry. Sending love”.

Fellow comedian Dara O Briain said: “Ah David, sorry to hear that. My condolences to you and Ivor and your family.”

Pick’s disease can often manifest itself in loss of inhibitions, inappropriate and impulsive behaviours and speech problems, according to the NHS.

Baddiel’s documentary showed how he, along with his brother, Ivor, managed their father, who was housebound and receiving around-the-clock care.
