Damsel Elysium Is London’s Most Stylish Experimental Sound Artist

There’s a changing of the guard in fashion and culture. Gen Z creators are pushing the conversation forward in ways both awe-inspiring and audacious. Our latest project, Youthquake, invites you to discover how these artists, musicians, actors, designers, and models are radically reimagining the future.

Entering the mysterious, miraculous world of Damsel Elysium, you might find them teasing a long, languorous melody out of their violin to channel the silent “whispers” of the trees surrounding them, or echoing the ominous rumble of an ancient forest speaking across the winds of time with their double bass. Elysium might be holding their instrument like their partner in a pas de deux and gently swaying, or they might have entwined flowers through their braids and the billowing sleeves of their dress to create “small gardens” across their body. As an experimental sound artist—and, it’s worth noting, one of London’s most sumptuously stylish dressers—Elysium has spent the past few years quietly crafting a boldly romantic universe all of their own.

It’s one that appears to have sprung to life fully-formed—ready for their rapidly growing audience to get lost in—even if it’s the result of many years of study and refinement. “It’s been a very long and windy road with many diversions, bumps, and dead ends,” says the 21-year-old Elysium, who grew up in north London, of the meandering creative journey they took to reach this point. “But to sum it all up, I’ve always enjoyed using my hands, painting, drawing, sculpting, writing stories in school and studying music privately up until I was about 15.” After pausing their studies in classical music as a teenager—partly due to a neck injury, but also due to their experiences of racism in what can still be a regressive corner of the music world—Elysium began making films and experimenting with combining different media to bring their multifaceted vision to life.
