Dakota Johnson Gives Good Rom-Com Heroine in the First Trailer for ‘Cha Cha Real Smooth’

After scooping up Cha Cha Real Smooth at Sundance in January for a cool $15 million, Apple TV+ has finally dropped a trailer for writer-director Cooper Raiff’s much-hyped romantic comedy.

The classic indie premise: 22-year-old Andrew (played by Raiff himself) moves back into his family home in New Jersey after graduating from college, begrudgingly taking a job “hyping up” 13-year-old bar and bat mitzvah guests, including by teaching them the Cha Cha Slide. Enter local mother Domino (Dakota Johnson) and her autistic daughter Lola (Vanessa Burghardt), who form a bond with the lost twenty-something—only for Andrew to fall in love with the engaged Domino.

The three-minute trailer includes pitch-perfect moments from Leslie Mann as Andrew’s mother and Everybody Loves Raymond’s Brad Garrett as his stepfather, but it’s Johnson’s understated performance in the movie that’s really standout. “Giving your heart to somebody is the most perplexing thing,” she muses through tears in the clip. Tellingly, in addition to appearing as Domino, Johnson loved Raiff’s debut Freshman Year so much that she signed on to produce Cha Cha through her company TeaTime Pictures.

“We worked really closely developing the script, and we really jumped at the opportunity to make the women in this story very real, and to allow Domino to be quite complicated and to not have to explain herself,” she explained while promoting the film at Sundance. “And it was like a real gift, I think. Meeting Cooper was just wonderful, we want to make all his movies… Cooper’s incredibly talented. The story’s really special, it’s timely, it’s inclusive.” Watch the trailer in full above, then prepare to have “Funky Town” stuck in your head until Cha Cha Real Smooth premieres on Apple TV+ on June 17.
