Composer Ravi had his best collaborations with Lata Mangeshkar – Times of India

Ravi Shankar Sharma who was known as simply Ravi in Hindi cinema churned out chartbusters all through the 1960s, and that too without the active support of Lata Mangeshkar. He preferred the vocals of Asha Bhosle as they suited his style better.

But whenever he did create song that he thought worthy of Lataji, he approached her without hesitation and she readily obliged.

One of his early hits for Lataji is the immortal Ae Mere Dil-e-nadaan Tu Gham Se Na Ghabrana in the film Tower House (1962). But even before Lataji sang Ravi to immortality in Tower House she lent her supple vocals for Ravi in Shakti Samanta’s second directorial Inspector and in another suspense film Ek Saal (the tearful tandem Sab Kuch Loota Ke Hosh Mein Aaye by Lataji and Talat Mehmood).

But the grandiloquence of Ravi’s sparse partnership with Lataji is most evident in a film called Mehdi released in 1958 where she sang some of her most exquisite mujras: Yeh Afasana Nahin, Pyar Ki Duniya Lut Gayi, Apne Kiye Pe Koi, Ajeeb Dastaan Hai Meri and Adaon Mein Shokhi.

In the 1960s Ravi switched almost entirely to Asha Bhosle for his female songs. But the rare foray with Lataji harvested all-time classics: Badle Badle Mere Sarkar (Chaudhvin Ka Chand), Lage Na Mora Jiya (Ghunghat), Sari Duniya Mein Dekhe Hai (Meherbaan), Sapne Hai Sapne (Nai Roshni), Lo Aa Gayi Unki Yaad (Do Badan), More Bole Chakore Bole (Gauri), Tu Hi Meri Mandir Tu Hi Meri Pooja (Khandaan), Milti Hai Zindagi Mein Mohabbat (Aankhen), Ghairon Pe Karam (Aankhen) and Woh Dil Kahan Se Laaoon (Bharosa).

The composition for Woh Dil Kaahaan Se Laaoon was used ditto by Ravi twelve years later in Ek Mahal Ho Sapnon Ka with different lyrics: Dil Mein Kisike Pyar Ka Jalta Hua Diya again sung by Lataji. In the 1970s Ravi’s popularity waned. No coincidence that his two finest songs in the 1970s Mere Devta Main Tumhari Hoon and Hazaar Baatein Kahe Zamana for an obscure film Ghatna where both sung by Lataji.
