Carlton star Harry McKay lashes out at his own fans as video shows team copping horrific abuse after loss to Essendon: ‘Take the jumper off! You’re a disgrace to your family!’

  • Defeat leaves Blues 15th on ladder

Carlton forward Harry McKay has lashed out at an ugly ‘minority’ among the club’s fans after supporters were captured on video hurling vile abuse at the team when they lost to Essendon last Sunday.

Footage uploaded to TikTok shows supporters screaming at the team while they walk up the tunnel to their dressing room just after the siren sounded at the MCG, with one man yelling, ‘Take the jumper off! All of you!’

‘Youse are a disgrace! A f**king disgrace! All of you, take it off! Take the f**king jumper off!’ the man continues

He then focuses on Blues star Jack Silvagni, the son of club legend Stephen and grandson of Blues great Sergio.

‘P**s off, Jack! F**k off, Jack! You’re a disgrace, a disgrace to your family!’ he bellows while other fans join in with their own abuse.

The 34-point loss was Carlton’s sixth straight defeat and their eighth loss in their last nine matches, leaving them 15th on the ladder after 13 rounds.

Blues fans have reacted furiously to the run of bad form, which comes on the back of a vastly improved performance in 2022 that saw the team just miss out on the finals.

Coach Michael Voss – in his second year at the helm – is under incredible pressure amid calls for him to be sacked.

The last time Carlton had a string of losses this bad, it cost then-coach Brendon Bolton his job in 2019.

McKay insisted the players are united in backing Voss to the hilt as he lashed out at the fans’ behaviour and the effect it had on other spectators.

‘I understand it’s a minority of supporters. A lot of our fans have been fantastic throughout this whole year and the passion and energy they bring to games,’ he said.

‘I think the minority in situations like that, it’s more disappointing for kids and families.

‘You want to create an environment that’s safe. Everyone likes to come to the footy so seeing the minority do that is disappointing.

‘We want to create games at Carlton that everyone feels comfortable and safe coming to so I want to thank the majority for doing that, but it’s disappointing that a few jeopardise that.

‘We’re big enough and ugly enough to deal with some of the things said over the fence.

‘When you’re walking off I don’t think it helps the greater cause if you hear abuse and everything when you’re walking off, but I guess it’s part of being a professional athlete.’

The Blues had a bonding session at veteran midfielder Ed Curnow’s property in Torquay last week as they search for answers to try and recapture their form from early in the 2022 season.

‘In my eight years [at Carlton] I think this is the closest and most united the group’s been,’ McKay said.

‘Obviously when on-field success isn’t necessarily coming, it’s really important to stay united and connected.

‘I think in footy and in life, through your hardest times or your despair you become connected as a group and hopefully you can bounce out of that stronger and that’s definitely the belief as a group that although it sucks at the moment, we’re going to be better for it.’
