Canelo Alvarez is ‘finalizing a deal’ for title fight against England’s John Ryder in MEXICO

Canelo Alvarez is ‘finalizing a deal’ to fight England’s John Ryder for the undisputed super middleweight championship in MEXICO – his first hometown bout since 2011

Canelo Alvarez could be set for a homecoming bout against Englishman John Ryder with the parties ‘finalizing a deal’ for an undisputed super middleweight championship fight.

An ESPN report says May 6 is the date which the fight will take place, with Jalisco, Mexico the likely location.

It would be Alvarez’s (58-2-2) first fight since September where he defeated Gennady Golovkin in their trilogy bout.

October left wrist surgery followed but Alvarez seems ready to go once more.

Ryder (32-5) will be facing a hostile environment entering into Alvarez’s home nation. Akron Stadium, a 46,000 capacity soccer stadium is said to be the favorite to host the fight.

Alvarez has not fought in Mexico since his 2011 defeat of Kermit Clinton as he retained the 154-pound title.

The 34-year-old Ryder, from Islington, will have a puncher’s chance at the world title – the second time in his career.

Back in 2019, Ryder controversially lost to Callum Smith for the WBA super middleweight belt thanks to highly contentious scoring decisions.

The London southpaw currently holds the WBO interim title after defeating Zach Parker in November.

Last month, Alvarez put to bed a feud with the World Cup winning Argentina national soccer team after taking aim at Lionel Messi following a victory over Mexico.
