Canadians Kylie Masse and Ingrid Wilm finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the women’s 100-metre backstroke on Tuesday at the world aquatic championships in Fukuoka, Japan.

Kaylee McKeown of Australia won in 57.53 seconds. Americans Regan Smith (57.78) and Katharine Berkoff (58.25) were second and third, respectively.
Masse came in at 59.909.
Masse, 27, won silver in the 100 backstroke at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and bronze in the event at the 2016 Rio Games.
The native of La Salle, Ont. took silver in the 100 backstroke at the worlds last year. She won gold in the event at worlds in 2017 and 2019.
Masse, a University of Toronto product, had the fourth-best qualifying time in the semifinals on Monday.
Wilm, of Calgary, had the sixth-best qualifying time.
Meanwhile, Toronto’s Summer McIntosh qualified for the women’s 200-metre freestyle final after posting the second-fastest time in the semifinals.
McIntosh, 16, finished fourth in the 400-metre freestyle on Sunday.
Montreal’s Ilya Kharun also qualified for the men’s 200-metre butterfly final with the third-fastest time in the semis. His clocking of one minute, 54.28 seconds was a Canadian record.
