Can Fruit Juices Replace A Complete Meal? Nutritionist Reveals

Juices are great for those who are not in the mood to eat the whole fruit. People would that fresh fruit juices are one of the best ways to ensure the flow of vitamins and nutrients in the body. But, health experts suggest that you should not replace meals with juices. Wondering why? Regular intake of fruit juices has a direct impact on your blood sugar levels. Nutritionist Lovneet Batra stated that when you drink juice as a meal replacement “there is a spike in your blood sugar level”. Not just that, the energy levels also crash faster, making you feel hungry shortly. The health expert explained that juice on its own is not nutritionally balanced, as it does not contain sufficient amounts of protein or fat.

In addition, Lovneet Batra stated that regularly consuming fruit juices has also been associated “with an increased risk of metabolic syndrome and obesity.”

While following a juice diet, you have to be cautious about the intake of essential vitamins, minerals and nutrients. Our body thrives best on a balanced diet, therefore once the juice diet ends, it can lead to unwanted muscle loss, lowered metabolism and an unhealthy re-gaining of fat. Due to a juice-only diet, you may not get enough of protein and fibre which may lead to untimely, and irresistible cravings. Also, fruits and vegetables are low in sodium, be sure to sneak in your daily dose to prevent any deficiencies.

As far as weight loss is concerned, juices are a great way to kick start this regime but should be followed up with healthy eating and exercise.

Do’s and Don’t of drinking fruit juices:

  • Choose different colours of fruits and vegetables to get a good mix of vitamins and minerals

  • The pulp – gained after taking out the juice – has the maximum fibre so don’t discard it straight away. The fibre keeps you full for a longer time of time.

  • Prefer fresh juices instead of packaged products.

  • You can balance the juices by adding protein in the form of almond milk, yoghurt, and flaxseeds among other things.

  • Pair fruits and vegetables after comparing the calories they contain.

Remember to consume a healthy balanced diet, get plenty of exercises and rest as well. Avoid resorting to extreme diets to ensure a fitter, healthier you!
