Bypolls Result: AAP leads in Jalandhar, counting underway in four Assembly seats

The counting of votes for by-elections to the Lok Sabha constituency of Jalandhar and four assembly constituencies, including Jharsuguda (Odisha), Suar (Uttar Pradesh), Chhanbey (Uttar Pradesh) and Sohiong (Meghalaya), started at 8 am on Saturday.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) on March 29 had announced the by-elections.

Jalandhar

As per the early trends by the ECI, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is leading at the Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat, which went to by-polls on May 10.

AAP’s Sushil Rinku was leading by more than 23000 votes over nearest rival Congress’ Karamjit Kaur Chaudhary.

A tight security arrangement was put in place in and around the counting centres set up at the office of the Director Land Records and Sports College Complex in Kapurthala Road.

The Jalandhar by-polls were held on 10 May and recorded a voter turnout of 54.70 per cent, well below the 63.04 per cent recorded in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The byelection for Jalandhar Lok Sabha, one of the 13 Lok Sabha constituencies in Punjab was necessitated after sitting MP Santokh Singh Chaudhary of Congress passed away on January 14 this year following a cardiac arrest during the party’s Bharat Jodo Yatra.

Uttar Pradesh (Suar, Chhanbey)

Early trends of Uttar Pradesh bye-elections showed Samajwadi Party and Apna Dal leading on one seat each in the counting of votes that began on Saturday, according to Election Commission’s latest data.

The assembly bye-elections were held in Suar and Chhanbey assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh.

As per the ECI’s latest trend at 10.00 am, Samajwadi Party is leading in the Suar constituency and Apana Dal is leading in Chhanbey.

As per the officials, counting for the votes will start at 8.00 am and all the necessary arrangements were made for the same.

The ruling coalition partner Apna Dal (Sonelal) is contesting both seats.

Suar assembly seat in Rampur district was declared vacant on February 13 after a Moradabad court sentenced Abdullah Azam Khan, the son of senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan, to two years in jail in a 15-year-old case.

Jharsuguda

The ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) was leading in Odisha’s Jharsuguda Assembly bypoll with 7,633 votes against its nearest rival, the BJP, on Saturday.

On completion of three rounds of counting, BJD candidate Dipali Das has secured 17,543 votes while BJP candidate Tankadhar Tripathy got 9,910 votes. Congress nominee Tarun Pandey got only 521 votes, officials in the office of Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) said.

In terms of percentage, the BJD got 60.64 per cent of the total votes counted so far, BJP 34.26 per cent and Congress secured only 1.8 per cent of votes.

Counting of votes began at 8 a.m. on Saturday amid tight security at Jharsuguda Engineering School.

Counting is being conducted on 14 tables. As votes polled in 253 booths will be counted, there will be 18 full rounds and another partial round.

Three-lawyer security arrangements have been made in and around the counting centre. It was expected that the counting would be completed between 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., they said.

A total of 79.21 per cent of 2.21 lakh voters exercised their franchise in the bypoll held on May 10.

The byelection was held following the murder of sitting MLA and the then Health Minister Naba Kishore Das on January 29 this year.

Sohiong

Counting of votes is underway for the Sohiong by-election in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills, a senior official said on Saturday. The counting exercise began at 8 am amid tight security, he said.

The by-poll was necessitated following the death of UDP candidate HDR Lyngdoh ahead of the assembly elections held in the rest of the state on February 27.

The National People’s Party (NPP) is aiming at increasing its seat tally in the 60-member assembly to 29 with a victory in the by-election.

Six candidates are in the fray – Synshar Lyngdoh Thabah of the UDP, Samlin Malngiang of the NPP, S Osborne Kharjana of the Congress, Sandondor Ryntathiang of the HSPDP, Sereph E Kharbuki of the BJP and Stodingstar Thabah of the TMC.

Polling in Sohiong took place on May 10 with over 91.8 per cent of the over 34,000 voters exercising their franchise.
