Browns star Myles Garrett takes aim at teammate Jadeveon Clowney after criticizing the organization

‘We want volunteers, not hostages’: Browns star Myles Garrett takes aim at teammate Jadeveon Clowney after he was sent home from practice for publicly criticizing the organization and claiming he ‘95%’ won’t be back next season

Browns pass rusher Myles Garrett has fired back at Jadeveon Clowney’s complaints about the organization, saying the team doesn’t want ‘hostages’ after Clowney indicated a likely exit in the offseason.

Speaking to Cleveland.com in a story published Thursday,  the three-time Pro Bowler voiced his displeasure with how he’s been used this season, as he believes he’s been switched to harder assignments at times with Garrett able to feast on weaker lineman.

‘You’re all trying to get somebody into the Hall of Fame when all that matters is winning,’ he said, while estimating there was a ’95 percent’ chance he wouldn’t be back next season.

‘Everybody got here for a reason, and we can all make plays. I know I am.’

‘I don’t even think [Garrett] notices,’ he said of the position switches.

‘I ain’t trying to say it’s him. I try to get along with everybody I play with. Me and him don’t have a problem. It ain’t his fault. It’s just B.S., and I don’t have time for it.’

Garrett and Clowney have had vastly different seasons individually, as the former’s 15 sacks have earned him another Pro Bowl nod while Clowney (in 12 games) has just two to his name.

And Garrett did not agree with Clowney’s belief that his star teammate has received any sort of preferential treatment.

‘I think everyone’s concern is about winning games and I disagree with seeing it that way. The guys in our room and really the guys in our organization, our sole focus this season’s been on winning,’ he said Friday.

‘We just want volunteers, not hostages.’

Garrett noted that Clowney’s complaints regarding matchups were a ‘little confusing’ when one reporter put it to him that he (Garrett) had faced the most double teams in the league.

Both players are former first overall draft picks (Clowney by the Texans), and Clowney called the pair the ‘best pass-rush duo in the NFL’ last season as he logged a more characteristic nine sacks.

That partnership now seems likely to end as Clowney was sent home from Friday’s practice.

‘I just feel like I need to be around somebody that believes in me and my ability. [It can’t] just be me believing in myself. I believe in myself more than anybody.’
