Boston Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas was asked about his late mom during their Mother’s Day game with the St. Louis Cardinals in a hugely insensitive moment.

While participating in an on-field interview with the ESPN broadcast team, Casas was asked a question about his late mother as he manned the field during the top of the third inning during Sunday’s contest.

‘I know your mom passed away when you were young,’ Karl Ravech awkwardly said during the ESPN broadcast. ‘What does Mother’s Day mean to you and your brother?’

After taking a second to pause as his facial expression could be seen quickly becoming much more serious, Casas whose mother passed away when he was only nine years old said with a crack in his voice: ‘Yeah, uh – what happened was obviously unfortunate for me.

‘But I have had so many mother figures in my life. Whether they have my last name or whether they don’t, I have so much support from everyone in and around my circle that I don’t even feel like I missed out on anything.’

‘I know she’s watching me every day, I know she’s smiling, proud of me, but for the most part, I think I’ve been alight.’

The subject was imaginably sensitive for Casas as it would be for anyone and appeared to be even tougher to answer in the middle of a game.

Thankfully for Casas the ball was not hit into an area that would have required him to make a play as he pushed through the pain and discomfort of the ill-timed question.

It is unlikely anyone would have blamed him for choosing not to answer the question or even ending the mid-game interview all together as soon as the insensitive question was asked.

Casas has had a rough start to the season and has hit for only a .192 average, 14 RBIs, and five home runs.
