Blue Jays’ Kirk, Guerrero Jr., Bichette extend leads in All-Star voting

The Toronto Blue Jays are in good standing to be well-represented at the 2022 All-Star Game.

Catcher Alejandro Kirk, first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and shortstop Bo Bichette continue to top their positions in American League balloting with all three earning over a million votes each so far.

Major League Baseball released its second balloting update Monday with the first stage of voting set to conclude on Thursday.

Kirk leads the pack at his position with 1,857,670 votes followed by New York Yankees catcher Jose Trevino in a distant second at 695,932.

Guerrero (1,624,228) also holds a significant lead over Seattle Mariners first baseman Ty France (880,530).

Bichette has a total of 1,084,794 votes and is just ahead of Chicago White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson (943,125).

Meanwhile, Santiago Espinal remains second among second basemen and George Springer is third among outfielders.

Espinal (943,125 votes) trails Houston Astros’ Jose Altuve (1,156,474) while Springer sits behind the two top vote-getters in the league in Yankees slugger Aaron Judge (2,433,088) and Los Angeles Angels star Mike Trout (2,134,471).

Third-baseman Matt Chapman (696,556) and DH Danny Jansen (510,820) are each in third-place for their position and outfielders Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (672,811) and Teoscar Hernandez (662,092) are currently sixth and seventh.

The top two vote-getters at each position (and the top six outfielders) as of Thursday will advance to the second phase of voting to determine who will make the All-Star teams and starts for each league.

The starters will be named July 8 with the remainder of the rosters unveiled two days later.

The leading vote-getter in each league during the first phase of voting will receive an automatic starting assignment at the All-Star Game and bypass the second phase of voting.

The 2022 All-Star Game takes place July 19 at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.
