BJP starts preparation for next round of polls

After its victory in four states, including Uttar Pradesh, in the just-concluded assembly elections, the BJP has started preparing for the next round of polls later this year in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh, and Karnataka in early 2023.

Himachal Pradesh chief minister Jairam Thakur, who called on BJP president JP Nadda and Union home minister Amit Shah on Friday in Delhi, discussed among other things the upcoming elections and the challenges posed by AAP and Congress. The big test before the assembly polls will be the urban local body elections in May-June. After winning Punjab, AAP has announced its plans for the Himachal Pradesh assembly elections. In the November bypolls, the BJP had lost one assembly and one Lok Sabha seats in the state.

While Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Gujarat visit has already given momentum to the state BJP’s election machinery, several senior BJP leaders and central ministers will visit Gujarat to assess the situation.

In Karnataka, where the BJP suffered setbacks in the assembly bypolls, the party is hopeful that the recent victories will energise the cadre for the next year’s polls. “Definitely, the victory in four states has energised the party workers and we are sure of repeating the government in Karnataka,” Arun Singh, BJP general secretary in-charge of the state, told ET. “I will start my tour of the state in a fortnight and I will assess the election preparedness of party workers.” He will visit all Karnataka districts and will stay for a day in each district to know more about the local issues.

The election results have also come as a shot in the arm for the BJP in states like Bihar where the alliance partners were constantly demanding caste census and special status. Caste census was one of the main planks of the opposition parties in UP. Riding on the UP success, Bihar BJP is considering tougher action against ally VIP’s Mukesh Sahni, who had been making anti-party statements.

“We will take a call on the issue. We won’t tolerate someone who is in alliance and goes against us every second day,” Bihar BJP president Sanjay Jaiswal told ET.
