Ben Foster reveals he was the ‘most hungover man in the world’ a week before his return to Wrexham

‘I was the most hungover man in the world!’: Ben Foster jokes that just a week ago he was revelling in an ‘all-dayer’ for the Gold Cup at the Cheltenham Festival, with 39-year-old keeping clean sheet for Wrexham after coming out of retirement

  • Ben Foster kept a clean sheet on his return to football for Wrexham on Saturday
  • Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney were in attendance to see their 3-0 victory
  • Foster revealed he spent last Saturday recovering from a hangover

Ben Foster enjoyed a successful return to Wrexham, on a day which was a massive contrast to how he spent last weekend.

The 39-year-old kept a clean sheet in his first match since coming out of retirement, as the National League leaders comfortably beat York City 3-0 on Saturday.

Though it was a comfortable afternoon for Wrexham, Foster still had to make second-half saves from Ryan Fallowfield and Mitch Hancox, in his first appearance for the club since he spent a brief spell on loan with them back in 2005.

After the match, Foster said it was a big change to how he spent his previous Saturday before coming out of retirement.

In a video posted on the Rob Ryan Red’s podcast TikTok channel, he said: ‘A week ago today it was Gold Cup Friday on Cheltenham and we had an all-dayer.

‘So I was the most hungover man in the world last Saturday. So this is a massive contrast to what that was like last week.’

Wrexham’s Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney were both in attendance to see Foster make his return for the club.

The victory pushes them three points clear at the top of the standings above closest challengers Notts County – with a game in hand.

Foster only came out of retirement on Thursday to sign for Wrexham until the end of the season in a stunning swoop for the National League leaders.

His move comes just a month after Tottenham failed to lure Foster to north London as cover for injured goalkeeper Hugo Lloris. r the first time in 18 years, having previously played there on loan in 2005.

Since his initial retirement, the 39-year-old star has hosted ‘Fozcast – The Ben Foster Podcast’, which boasts 175,000 YouTube subscribers.

Foster has since admitted that his wages are ‘peanuts’ and that he ‘can’t wait’ to meet Reynolds.

He said: ‘Nine months after I retired, I’ve gone and gotten the gloves out of the garage, I’ve blown the dust off the boots, because I’ve signed for a football team. We first heard about it from goalkeeping super-agent Richard Lee.

‘He said: “Ben – Wrexham, what are you thinking?” That injury (to first-choice goalkeeper Rob Lainton) happened on Saturday, we’re recording the podcast on the Wednesday, I’ll be going to training Monday morning.’

The average Premier League wage is a little over £60,000 per week, according to the Professional Footballers’ Association.

‘I don’t need much (money) – to be honest,’ Foster continued. ‘The negotiations took about five minutes. Wages wise, it’s literally peanuts… the part for me is getting the team over the line and getting them promoted. I’m a very low maintenance player – just wheel me out, I’ll do a job.

‘Apparently Ryan (Reynolds) is going to give me a call later today! Van Wilder is one of my favourite films! Buzzing to talk to him later. They (owners Reynolds and McElhenney) are so prevalent at the football club, they are always there. it’s not like a plaything, they want to be a part of it.’

After Wrexham’s victory, Foster shared a number of pictures to his Instagram page, including one with Reynolds.
