Heart attack in women: Warning signs

In most women, chest pain or discomfort is commonly seen during heart attack.

But several reports say, women are more likely than men to have heart attack symptoms unrelated to chest pain like discomfort in neck, jaw, shoulder, upper back or upper belly, shortness of breath, pain in the arms, nausea, sweating, dizziness, fatigue and indigestion.

As is seen in many cases, the symptoms related to heart attack are not noticeable and this is why many people do not get timely medical help.

Different factors due to which women overlook the warning signs

Many doctors have said that women tend to downplay their symptoms. “As seen among many of my patients and their attendants, women even with multiple heart risk factors tend to downplay their symptoms that are obviously related to heart disease. In my practice, the incidence of women presenting with heart attacks is 10% of total cases and they usually present much later and also tend to self-medicate under assumption that it is probably a gastric symptom,” says Dr. P. Vinodh Kumar MD, DM, Senior Consultant Cardiologist and Clinical Lead, Department of Cardiology, Prashanth Superspeciality Hospital, Kolathur.

Several experts have agreed that we as a family and as a society are a bit dismissive about a woman’s health. “Culturally I have seen that we are a bit dismissive about a woman’s symptoms and they are brought to health care rather too late. This is more prevalent in large joint families even in affluent classes where the decision maker is the head of the joint family,” believes Dr. Ganesh Kumar, Head of Department Cardiology, Senior Consultant Interventional Cardiologist, Dr. L.H. Hiranandani Hospital, Mumbai.

What causes heart attacks in women?

High cholesterol, blood pressure, obesity, stress, lack of physical activity and low levels of estrogen post menopause are the major factors which make women prone to heart attacks.

While women take pride in multi tasking, this sort of stress actually is a big risk factor in their life. While multi tasking for their family, they tend to ignore their own health and are too late in avoiding complications.
