Bam Rodriguez v Sunny Edwards talks underway, could land in November or December | Boxing News

A POTENTIAL fight between Sunny Edwards and Jesse Rodriguez could happen as soon as November or December.

Edwards returns to action against Andres Campos on Saturday night while Rodriguez is recovering from a broken jaw sustained in his last fight two months ago.

The two rivals are viewed as the best flyweights in the world and a fight between both is high on the priority list of their promoter Eddie Hearn.

Speaking on the Matchroom YouTube channel Hearn was asked if Rodriguez was next for Edwards should he come through Campos.

“100 per cent. It was a very fast turnaround for him. Seven weeks since he signed with us. He wants Jesse Rodriguez; he wants Julio Cesar Martinez he wants Artem Dalakian.”

Rodriguez, unbeaten in 18 starts, got back to training last week and Hearn gave an indication when the 23-year-old will return.

“A broken jaw is never good. It’s going to take some time to heal. He’s going to be ready November; December and I think we can make the Sunny Edwards fight.

“We’re in talks at the moment to make Jesse Rodriguez against Sunny Edwards. It is one of the best fights in boxing. Unquestionable.

“I know it’s the little guys and I know it doesn’t quite have the profile and the adoration of Fury against AJ but I’m telling you now Jesse Rodriguez against Sunny Edwards is one of the best pound-for-pound fights in boxing and that is a fight we would like to make. I think Jesse and Robert Garcia would go straight into that fight in November-December.”

Hearn’s plans are to tie up the division with one man out in front with all the belts. This means not only is Rodriguez-Edwards a possibility but so is Dalakian against Martinez as well.

“Julio Cesar Martinez does have some backed up mandatories, but I want to get this division unified I want to have one undisputed champion,” Hearn said.

“We don’t get the chance to do that very often but when there is a path [and] when there is a way let’s get it done. Jesse Rodriguez against Sunny Edwards, Julio Cesar Martinez against Artem Dalakian. Winners fight the winners. One champion.”
