At Marni, Blurred Red Lips and Gilded Hair Charms Offered a Dose of Whimsy
Backstage at Marni’s fall 2022 show, hairstylist Julien d’Ys arrived with a brown cardboard box labeled “Charms.” It featured a scribbled list of names and a hand-drawn illustration of a model whose cascade of waves were decorated in hair baubles. Needless to say, it foreshadowed what was to come.
Inside the presentation’s abandoned warehouse venue, a handful of models walked the dirt runway with air-dried bends and woven braids festooned with an array of metallic hair charms, from gem-studded hearts to intricate flowers to bunches of pearls. Strands of hair served, in essence, as a whimsical charm bracelet, stacked with a collection of ornaments.
For other models, especially those clad in the collection’s knitted balaclavas and wiry headpieces, the standout beauty touch was a painterly deconstructed crimson lip; bright orangey-red pigment pressed at the center with a blurred graduation towards the outer corners to ombre effect. Both elements fit right into the mix of designer Francesco Risso’s eclectic, bohemian-minded looks, which saw models wearing designs from the collection in tandem with pieces from their own closets.
This season’s Marni show was a reminder that whether you’re wearing a well-loved, hand-me-down sweater or a far-flung treasure strung into your hair (or both!), the most spellbinding looks always have a story.
