Akshay Kumar’s ‘Prithviraj’ to release on 21 January 2022; averts Diwali clash with ‘Sooryavanshi’ and ‘Antim’ – Times of India

The film that also stars Sanjay Dutt, Sonu Sood, and marks the debut of Manushi Chhillar, was originally slated to arrive in theatres this Diwali. However, according to the latest reports announcement, the film has now booked a 21 January 2022 release.

This announcement comes just a day after director Rohit Shetty announced that his film ‘Sooryavanshi’ that also stars Akshay Kumar in the lead, will release on the festive holiday. The director took to social media to share the new release date of the film hours after Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray announced the reopening of cinema halls in the state from October 22.

“Thanks to our Honourable Chief Minister, Shri Uddhav Thackeray, theatres in Maharashtra to reopen from 22nd October. And FINALLY!!! we can say, This DIWALI…AA RAHI HAI POLICE…,” Shetty wrote.

Earlier Saturday, a delegation of filmmakers and theatre owners including Shetty met Thackeray to discuss the reopening of cinema halls across Maharashtra, a key territory for movie business – which was shut since April this year due to the second wave of COVID-19.

In a Twitter post, Kumar also said he was grateful to the CM for allowing the cinemas to run.

“So many families would be thanking Sh Uddhav Thackeray today! Grateful for allowing the reopening of cinema halls in Maharashtra from Oct 22. Ab kisi ke roke na rukegi – AA RAHI HAI POLICE #Sooryavanshi #Diwali2021” he wrote.

‘Sooryavanshi’ was originally scheduled to release on March 24, 2020, but was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic, which led to theatre shutdown across the country. The makers then planned a Diwali 2020 premiere but had to postpone it to April 30 this year.

Although ‘Prithviraj’ has walked out of the box office battle, Akki will not enjoy a solo release as Marvel’s ‘Eternals’ is still scheduled to release on the long weekend. Although there is no new update, Shahid Kapoor’s ‘Jersey’ is also expected to release on the same day, along with Salman Khan’s ‘Antim’.
